abercrombie outlet clothing is one of the most coveted of all casual designer clothing. The clothing very fashion, but It is also among the most expensive. Instead of paying top dollar at the mall for Abercrombie, you can get it for less money when you shop online. And get the same clothing with the mall, why not?
The money is not the only reason why you should shop online for Abercrombie clothing. Selection is a big factor. When you shop in a mall store for abercrombie, you are limited to the selection that they offer in the store. This can limit you when it comes to sizes, colors, and styles. Not all stores carry the same designs and you may be stuck in an area where the selection is very limited.
And shopping online you can easy to find which one you like. When you go online, you can see clearly the selection as it is presented. You can also get more of a selection in clothes when you go online, as opposed to shopping offline. If you want to get the best selection when it comes to Abercrombie clothes, go online for easy shopping.
Another factor is that if you shop at an online vendor that specializes not only in Abercrombie clothing, but also other top designers, you can mix and match your purchases. If you want to buy jeans from another designer as well as clothes from Abercrombie seller, then you can do so easily when you look for a vendor that has a full range of clothes from the hot designers. You are not limited when shopping online as you are when you choose to shop online.
Very often, when you shop online for anything, including designer clothes, also the shoes, and other products, you will find that there is a much greater selection awaiting you. It can be difficult to get what you want in an offline store. This is not so when you shop online. When you shop online, you can find a vast selection of just about anything that you want. If you want to get Abercrombie clothing that not everyone else is wearing, your best bet is to shop for it online, also the price is compete. But attention, more and more scamer on the internet,so when you shopping, please check carefully.

Abercrombie until it stopped publishing the quarterly.

The best news is the lasting Christmas gift hollister is giving to America. When I tried to order a "Field Guide" by telephone, an A&F employee told me the company's decision to keep the quarterly out of stores is permanent. She, too, blamed the boycotts. The only people who will have access to the quarterly in future, she added, are those who already have a subscription. It's a huge step forward.
A&F's CEO Mike Jeffries has for years sneered at those who complained about his quarterly's filth. Asking him softly to clean up his act didn't work, but big stick evidently did.
Who was behind the boycotts?
"Ever hear of Dr. Dobson?" Brennan asked.
James Dobson of Focus on the Family recently spent a radio program and an appearance on MSNBC's Scarborough Country urging listeners to boycott Ruehl No.925 until it stopped publishing the quarterly.
Dobson was joined in his efforts by former Redskins coach Joe Gibbs, Chuck Colson, the American Decency Association (ADA), the National Coalition for the Protection of Children and Families, and others.
Pressure on A&F may also have come from another source: Corporations that own other stores. Bill Johnson, president of the American Decency Association, says that his group had come up with a unique new strategy for getting a Grand Rapids, Michigan A&F to not only stop selling its raunchy quarterly, but also to get rid of the huge photographs of naked models that decorate the walls of every A&F store.
Discussions with abercrombie and fitch and the manager of the Rivertown Crossings Mall in Grand Rapids had gone nowhere. So Johnson sent a letter to the managers of all 120 mall stores expressing concerns about what children visiting the mall were being exposed to. He enclosed several photos from A&F's quarterly. Police yourselves, he warned, or we'll urge people to boycott the entire mall — right at the start of the Christmas shopping season.
Johnson immediately heard from two stores, including the manager of one of the mall's largest department stores. In the last two weeks there have been, Johnson says, "significant discussions" between the corporation that owns the department store and Abercrombie, leading the ADA to agree to agree to delay the boycott.
The mainstreaming of porn is nothing new. What outrages many parents is that Abercrombie is deliberately aiming its porn and damaging lifestyle advice, not at dirty old men, but at kids.

Girls Who Wear Abercrombie & Fitch

Abercrombie has made headlines over the years by releasing such charming women's t-shirts with sexist slogans such as "With these, who needs brains?" and "Blondes are adored, brunettes are ignored," (the shirts were pulled after boycotts sprung up) and by promoting racist t-shirts with lines like "Two Wongs Can Make It White." Somehow, the company kept going after these disasters, as the kids kept dropping their money on overpriced terry cloth pants.
abercrombie outlet rose to prominence during my high school years, when bland preppy clothing somehow became all the rage. Never before or since have kids in public school taken such a shine to khaki pants and puka shell necklaces. Walking into an abercrombie and fitch (or a Hollister, or an American Eagle) is a bit like walking into a super lame high school party; the stench of cheap cologne is everywhere, the lights are low, the music is bad and way too loud, and there is an air of pseudo-sexuality that screams, "I want to make out with you but I'm going to be reallllly bad at it!"
But the recession is changing everything, and the kids are moving away from the hollister clothing brand. The store is struggling, posting a 34% drop in sales since last year, a number Caitlin McDevitt of MSNBC notes is "the worst among retailers in March."
"There was a time when Abercrombie's sexy ad campaigns and half-dressed salespeople were irresistible to teens," McDevitt writes, "A time when an endless line outside the flagship Fifth Avenue store curled around the block each morning. A time when the store effortlessly convinced young people that wearing two expensive polo shirts was infinitely more stylish than wearing just one. And the teens followed like lambs. There were days when A&F stock topped $80 per share, but those days have passed. Now, shares have sunk to less than one-third of that, and it seems that the embroidered Moose logo may be losing its cachet."

My fiance thinks because its a special occasion we should just drop the bankroll and pay the extra money for designer tiffany jewellery, so it will be even more special for them. To me though it never really mattered, I mean diamonds are diamonds haha. Its not that we can’t afford it, I am just curious about the general feeling.
Haha I dont want to trick them, or copy an exact necklace, just the general idea.
Dingding: Don’t worry I am not an idiot, I own a home, a rental property, have a job, a college degree and have a nice chunk of change in the bank. I know what I can afford, but thank you for your concerns.
For my bridesmaids I was going to find a nice design of jewelry (found one I really like from Tiffany) and have it made by a local Tiffany jewelllery uk so that it would be less expensive, but still great quality (good quality real diamonds and aquamarines)For your bridesmaids, I’d say go with Tiffany. Every girl likes opening that little blue box!
For an engagement ring or jewelry for myself, I wouldn’t care either way, but for a gift…there’s just something extra special about it coming from Tiffany. the iGems are not a real product. But seeing as the iGems are the imaginative lovechild between sybarites Apple and Tiffany, one could expect that such branding would be the most expensive tiffany jewellery sale the world has ever seen, and your girlfriend wouldn’t be wanting the Nano edition, if you know what we mean.
But it could never be… as Apple would never package in blue, and Tiffany would never produce a piece so hideous. Until the pigs take flight, it will be up to Man to fuse gold, iPhone and ring, and up to men to buy the cubic zirconia knock off.

Abercrombie&rsquos talent shines

The lesson here is that some of these retailers might be better off sticking to their core concepts instead of pushing ever more demographic-specific options out to the consumer.Joe abercrombie and fitchdescribes his work as &ldquounheroic fantasy”, a beautifully turned phrase which it&rsquos hard to better if you need to quickly sum up Best Served Cold.
The basic plot, as the title clearly suggests, is a classic quest for revenge, but it&rsquos in the execution, with a gleeful disregard for the ever-growing body count, and in the flawed characters, that abercrombie and fitch talent shines. While A&F employees are required to wear jeans and a polo shirt, she was given permission to wear a white cardigan while working on the floor.
The basic plot, as the title clearly suggests, is a classic quest for revenge, but it&rsquos in the execution, with a gleeful disregard for the ever-growing body count, and in the flawed characters, that Abercrombie &rsquos talent shines.abercrombie and fitch recently announced it will pull the plug on its RUEHL chain, a concept with 29 stores in high-profile malls across the country that targeted well-heeled consumers in their 20s.
Riam Dean has a prosthetic arm that attaches at the elbow, and she typically wears a sweater to cover the prosthetic. But maybe it&rsquos not just the abercrombie and fitch fault in this case.Put simply, there are no gallant, selfless or likeable characters in Abercombie&rsquos first standalone novel – yet somehow, you find yourself rooting for many of them.

If you are no in USA,When people are looking to purchase clothing in American brands like the Abercrombie & Fitch label which is growing in popularity from stores in the other country they often have very little choice available for prospective customers.

Victory for Abercrombie & Fitch shop worker

abercrombie and fitch, supplier of pricy casualwear to City bankers' teenage children, today said like-for-like sales had crashed 30% in the second quarter.
It has been hit hard by the steep recession in the US, where consumers have been keeping their wallets firmly shut.
However, the company which runs a flagship store in the West End and a handful of Hollister-branded shopping mall stores here, said it wanted to continue its international expansion.
An abercrombie and fitch shop worker with a prosthetic arm has won her case for wrongful dismissal against the retailer.
Riam Dean claimed she was taken off the shop floor of the American retailer’s London flagship store on Savile Row because she did not fit with the company’s “Look Policy”.
A central London tribunal has ruled she was wrongfully dismissed and unlawfully harassed, but did not uphold her claim for disability discrimination.abercrombie and fitch
According to reports, the tribunal awarded Dean £7,800 compensation for injury to her feelings and £1,077.37 for loss of earnings and £136.75 damages for her wrongful dismissal.
Dean is believed to have befriended disabled model Sophie Morgan and the pair have launched Imperfect, a clothing range and campaign group.

Abercrombie and Fitch To Close Ruehl

There are only 25 Ruehl stores in the US today, and anyone who has ever visited one will admit – its a VERY unique store. Instead of the storefront being floor to ceiling windows, it looks like a brick mansion that you’d find in Greenwich Village. Right down to the wrought iron fence, concrete walkway, subway/air grates and doors that look like they could come right from an a building in Greenwich Village. The inside is equally as impressive – the store is broken up into rooms, with a long hallway going down the center, dividing the womens and mens sections. The check outs are in the rear of the store – in a room that looks like it could be the garage, with exposed wooden beams and walls. Some rooms were even on different “floors” a good 2 or 3 feet higher than the other floor.abercrombie and fitch
The first quarter was clearly a difficult one for us. With a challenging economic environment, the consumer continues to show a reluctance to spend on premium brands; a price consciousness dictating shopping habits unlike anything I have ever seen…
Other “premium” brands – Express, Banana Republic, J Crew, and Martin & Osa to name a few – have done nothing but sell clothes for their regular price – but discount them down to almost half price, bombard email in boxes with one day sales, online sales, 30% off sales, I could go on and on. Those sales bring people in the doors, and make sales.
The amount of detail that was designed into these stores was amazing – and the prices of the clothes did reflect that, but it really made you feel part of the story, made you feel part of the clothes – made you part of the experience, something that you will never get at The Gap, or Express.
abercrombie and fitch’s downfall with Ruehl (and the considerable sales drop at other Abercrombie brands of late) came from their arrogance to refuse to acknowledge the state of the economy and price their clothes accordingly – or at the least, provide sales or discounts or specials. For almost a year now Abercrombie’s President and CEO, Mike Jeffries has continually stated that abercrombie and fitch (and affiliated concepts) are premium brands, discounting them or placing sales on their products – even temporarily – will damage the reputation of the brands and make it more difficult for the brands to return to their premium status. Then, suddenly, on May 15th, in their quarterly earnings report Jeffries made a comment which clearly demonstrates just how out of touch those people are in New Albany, Ohio with whats going in the retail environment today:
If you look at the quarterly results of those clothing companies – they aren’t as bad as Abercrombie’s have been and they have no intentions of closing any of these premium brands.. In fact, J Crew is still expanding their Madewell brand, Aeropostale is launching a new concept – PS, and Abercrombie is going full speed ahead with their Gilly Hicks brand. For those unaware of what Gilly Hicks is – it’s a women’s lingerie store, with pricing CONSIDERABLY lower than you’d expect to find at an abercrombie and fitch/Ruehl store, and a lot lower than a comparable item at Victoria’s Secret as well.
It’s unfortunate that Ruehl has to take the hit, because the concept was great, the feel of the store was great, the clothing was great – but the prices were just too high, and the management of the company too arrogant to gauge the market better.
Oh, and once – sometimes twice a week – I’m now getting emails advertising their “Summer Clearance” sales in the stores and online from all the Abercrobmie brands.. How ironic. Not the least of which we’re just heading into Summer now – and they’re already doing Summer Clearance.

Abercrombie & Fitch store in London

A manager today denied "taunting and goading" a disabled employee at an abercrombie and fitch
store in London.

Riam Dean has told an employment tribunal she "questioned her worth as a human being" after she was forced to work in the stockroom of the US clothing retailer because she did not fit its strict "look" policy.

The law student, who was born with her left forearm missing, said she was granted special permission to wear a cardigan to cover the join in her arm, but was later removed from the shop floor because the cardigan did not adhere to the dress code.

Maria Barbera, the store manager said to have taunted Miss Dean at the London flagship store on Saville Road, denied being aggressive towards the junior employee.

The Spanish manager, who has since been promoted to a more senior role at the abercrombie and fitch sister chain, Hollister, told the tribunal panel in London: "I was aware that she had a prosthetic arm, but did not know that she had been given approval to wear clothes that were not in accordance with the look policy.

"I explained that she could not work on the shop floor because of her cardigan and asked that she go and work in the stockroom. Riam did not seem upset by this."

However, later, the tribunal heard, the manager learned that Miss Dean had complained to a colleague about being "kicked off" the shop floor.abercrombie and fitch

Ms Barbera confronted Miss Dean, telling her: "If you have a problem with me, you tell me."

Ms Barbera told the panel: "I was direct and straight to the point. I did not think my manner was aggressive or intimidating in any way.
"Rian told me she was upset because I did not give her the opportunity to take the cardigan off.

"I explained that I had wrongly assumed that she would not want to remove the cardigan."

Ms Barbera told Miss Dean that, if she took her cardigan off, she could go and work on the shop floor.

Miss Dean is then alleged to have replied: "It's okay, I'm used to being the victim."

Ms Barbera acknowledged that she was "upset and annoyed" by events, but claimed she did not make the link between Miss Dean's reluctance to take off her cardigan and the fact that she wore a prosthetic arm until later.

The tribunal heard that Ms Barbera's only equal opportunities training had been in the form of a computer programme completed on line.

Ms Dean started working at the store on June 11 last year. She worked five shifts before leaving on July 4 after the encounter with Ms Barbera.

Abercrombie Business

Is business increasing / decreasing / flat since last month?
All of the respondents said that the location was open for more than a year.
Knit Tanks, Lexi, and Dresses were all stated to be the top ‘Key Looks’ by 10% of the respondents.abercrombie and fitch
28% of the respondents reported that the Emma Low Rise Boot Jean was the top selling women’s product, while 24% of the respondents said that the Margaret top was the top selling women product.
All of the respondents reported that there is enough of the most popular item in stock now.
17% of the respondents reported that there would be difficulty getting the most popular product if they needed it during the holiday season. 83% said that there would be no difficulty getting the items during the holiday season.
45% of the respondents reported that business is increasing since last month, with 31% reporting no change in business in the last month, and 24% of the respondents reporting a loss in business the last month.
Conclusion of Channel Check: The survey suggests that there was not a large increase in sales during the last month. There also does not seem to be a dominant new women’s product or a dominant women’s ‘Key Look’ out right now. The stocks of their most popular items are full, furthering the point that there is not a large craze for a clothing item at this point. However, during the holiday season, there could be difficulty getting the most popular product if they needed it. Overall
abercrombie and fitch looks to be seeing a small increase in business, with no new items driving sales by itself.
In July we have asked 29 different abercrombie and fitch locations several questions in order to gauge sales trends. Here are the questions that we asked.
Has this location been open for more than one year?
Which of the following ‘Key Looks’(Women’s) categories is the most popular this spring?
Which of the following Women’s products people have been buying the most of?
Are there enough of the most popular item in-stock right now?
Will it be hard to get more of the most popular product if they need to get more for the holiday season?

Wag of the Week - Rep. Neil Abercrombie

his is sweeter than puppy breath.

Representative Neil abercrombie and fitch alien a resolution in the House of Representatives today that was advised to put all those Republican legislators who clandestinely cloister bearing deniers in an afflictive position. abercrombie and fitch's resolution commemorates the 50th ceremony of Hawaii’s statehood. Ah, but there's a wee catch...

Greg Sargent writes on Plum Line: It describes Hawaii as Barack Obama’s birthplace. "In the accent of the resolution, there is a account that Hawaii is the birthplace of the 44th Admiral of the United States," abercrombie and fitch agent Dave Helfert confirms. That confronts House GOPers with a choice: They can vote for the measure, and endorse the abstraction that Obama was built-in in Hawaii, which could acquire the acrimony of birthers. Or they can vote adjoin commemorating the 50th state’s abutting of our adored Union. Or GOPers can skip the vote, but that could attending nutty. "Far be it from us to try to activity things up," Helfert said puckishly. "The admiral was built-in there, so what are you gonna do? Not acknowledgment it?"

Abercrombie and Fitch The better cast of the recession

While abundant banking websites (including this one) accept searched for the brands best positioned to survive the recession, beneath absorption has been accustomed to the adverse end of the spectrum.

Even as companies like Walmart and Target are application the bread-and-butter abatement to abbreviate and grow, others are award themselves bent in bootless business models that abuse their survival. Unwilling or clumsy to acclimate with the times, they assume acceptable to become the recession's dinosaurs: once-magnificent beasts destroyed by an ever-changing environment.

The best applicant for afterlife appropriate now may able-bodied be abercrombie and fitch(ANF). The retailer, already the sixth-most accepted cast for teenagers, spent abundant of the aboriginal 2000s affianced in massive expansion, abacus sister food Hollister, Ruehl, and Gilly Hicks. As the recession has advanced, it has watched its revenues plummet. In the additional division of 2009, sales alone by 30 percent, as it absent $26.7 million.

Abercrombie's better botheration is its abhorrence to accommodation on price. Over the endure year, amidst bottomward sales and bloodless revenues, high-end retailers from Saks to Coach to Barneys accept offered big discounts, developed cheaper cast lines, and opened aperture stores. Faced with consumers ambitious added superior for lower prices, they accept approved to acquisition means to advance their cast character while bottomward their costs.

Not Abercrombie. Claiming that sales and discounts would "cheapen" the brand, the alternation has maintained its top prices, even in the face of coast sales. While this has been abhorrent for revenues, it has been abundant for cast identification: area abercrombie and fitch and Aeoropostale were already about identical, they are now acutely differentiated. Aeropostale -- which has alone prices -- is the abundance with barter in it.

Given the history of the brand, Abercrombie's angle is harder to understand. After all, in its beforehand apotheosis as an campaign outfitter, it was the clothier of best for Amelia Earhart, Ernest Hemingway, Teddy Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy. Following crumbling fortunes, bankruptcy, buyouts, and rebrandings, it begin itself adapted into an ersatz-preppie capital brand, characterized by loud music, atmospheric photos, and half-naked ambitious models hawking all-encompassing hoodies and ripped jeans.

Thousands of consumers accept abstruse that recessions are a abundant time to amend needs and amend spending habits. If abercrombie and fitch fails to do the same, it is acceptable to acquisition itself adapted into a cautionary account of a abundance that was larboard by the wayside if it beneath to change with the times.

Abercrombie and Fitch's recession

While numerous financial websites (including this one) have searched for the brands best positioned to survive the recession, less attention has been given to the opposite end of the spectrum.

Even as companies like Walmart and Target are using the economic downturn to retrench and grow, others are finding themselves caught in failed business models that threaten their survival. Unwilling or unable to adapt with the times, they seem likely to become the recession's dinosaurs: once-magnificent beasts destroyed by an ever-changing environment.

The best candidate for extinction right now may well be abercrombie and fitch (ANF). The retailer, once the sixth-most popular brand for teenagers, spent much of the early 2000s engaged in massive expansion, adding sister stores Hollister, Ruehl, and Gilly Hicks. As the recession has advanced, it has watched its revenues plummet. In the second quarter of 2009, sales dropped by 30 percent, as it lost $26.7 million.

abercrombie and fitch's biggest problem is its unwillingness to compromise on price. Over the last year, amid dropping sales and anemic revenues, high-end retailers from Saks to Coach to Barneys have offered big discounts, developed cheaper brand lines, and opened outlet stores. Faced with consumers demanding more quality for lower prices, they have tried to find ways to maintain their brand identity while dropping their costs.

Not abercrombie and fitch. Claiming that sales and discounts would "cheapen" the brand, the chain has maintained its high prices, even in the face of plummeting sales. While this has been terrible for revenues, it has been great for brand identification: where abercrombie and fitch and Aeoropostale were once almost identical, they are now clearly differentiated. Aeropostale -- which has dropped prices -- is the store with customers in it.

Given the history of the brand, abercrombie and fitch's stand is hard to understand. After all, in its earlier incarnation as an expedition outfitter, it was the clothier of choice for Amelia Earhart, Ernest Hemingway, Teddy Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy. Following declining fortunes, bankruptcy, buyouts, and rebrandings, it found itself transformed into an ersatz-preppie mall brand, characterized by loud music, atmospheric photos, and half-naked would-be models hawking generic hoodies and ripped jeans.

Thousands of consumers have learned that recessions are a great time to reassess needs and reconsider spending habits. If Abercrombie fails to do the same, it is likely to find itself transformed into a cautionary tale of a store that was left by the wayside when it declined to change with the times.

Abercrombie Is A Bitch

Walking to the back of the store, I am bombarded with the larger-than-life-sized photos of taut young torsos in blue jeans barely pulled up enough to crest the top of their pubic bone. Strangely, all of the very short zippers are undone in the pictures. I fantasize briefly about…
Even though I knew better, my daughter with the superstar style persuaded me to step through the portal of auditory hell to use a gift card she had long ago received for abercrombie and fitch. I blamed it on my practical nature as she led me right over the threshold to where the club level music volume was pulsing.

They have some nice looking stuff, but most of it requires layering (because it’s too skimpy to be worn without something under it or over it). After all, that’s their look for the female. They’ll cheerfully pull together an ensemble consisting of a cute tank top under a low cut paper thin t-shirt with a zipper hoodie to throw over the whole thing. That will probably be about $100 before you even look at the jeans, shorts or leggings.
I urged my teenage icon, “just grab a t-shirt off of the clearance table and let’s get out of here.” Oh yeah, I was a lot of fun to be with at this point. I looked around at the other shopping couples , they didn’t seem to be filled with a visceral hate for the overpriced, dimly lit haven for the soon-to-be deaf.abercrombie and fitch
…. ripping the ear bud off of the cashier’s head because her lips are moving but I can’t hear a word she is saying. Look, if you want me to pay you are going to have to tell me how much (but it’s too loud in here to hear) or maybe you could show me (but it’s too cave-like to see). No wonder we’re all overpaying in here. We just sign the bloody receipt so we can get out of the store without incident.abercrombie and fitch

Disabled Abercrombie & Fitch employee wins tribunal

A disabled British law student from London, who has a prosthetic arm, was forced to work in the stock room of abercrombie and fitch's flagship store in the English capital for not fitting in with its strict "look policy".
Riam Dean, 22, claimed she was forced off the sales floor of the clothing chain's London shop in Savile Row because of a "blatant policy of eugenics". Miss Dean was born with her left forearm missing and claimed disability discrimination after being repremanded for wearing a cardigan during her shift last summer. The student said that the incident has made her "question her worth as a human being" and claimed that she was effectively "bullied" out of her job when she resigned in July last year.
A central London employment tribunal ruled today said that she had been wrongfully dismissed and unlawfully harassed.
abercrombie and fitch have been order to pay Miss Dean over $14,000 for "hurt feelings", loss of earnings and damages, but the panel did not uphold her claim for disability discrimination.
Initially, she was given permission to wear a plain white cardigan to cover the join between her skin and her prosthetic arm, but was later moved to the stockroom. Miss Dean emotionally said, "My entire perception of my own self worth was shattered. I pride myself on being quite a confident girl but I had never experienced prejudice like that before and it made me feel utterly worthless."
Jason Nisse, a PR executive from the firm Fishburn Hedges, added: "abercrombie and fitchshould not confuse creating an aspirational image with being elitist.
Staff working in the most visible roles at the store are known as "models" and some male workers parade around top-less wearing low-slung jeans. "Visual associates" are employed to check that workers are dressed in line with a centrally defined "key look" which changes each season.
In the US, abercrombie and fitch recently settled a $40 million lawsuit brought by nine former employees, all from ethnic minority group claiming they were forced to work in stockrooms or night shifts as they did not fit the Abercrombie "look".

American Apparel workers let go over legal status

Clothing company American Apparel Inc. said Thursday it is terminating about 1,500 employees at its Los Angeles operations after a government investigation into workers’ immigration status.
The federal government has recently shifted its attention in immigration probes to make employers the primary target of immigration raids. In July, Homeland Security released a list of 652 businesses nationwide that will receive audits of their work force.
After an audit of American Apparel’s employee records, the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement informed the company earlier this summer that documents for about 1,800 current workers — representing about one-third of its Los Angeles-based work force — were either illegally working in the U.S. or potentially illegal to work.
The workers were given 30 to 60 days to produce additional documents proving their eligibility. Of the 1,800 workers identified, 1,600 were deemed to be unauthorized to work. The agency wasn’t able to verify the status of 200 others.
American Apparel’s founder, Dov Charney, has been an outspoken opponent of U.S. immigration policies. In a letter to employees, Charney said he was “deeply saddened by the fact that many of you will be leaving the company over the next few days and weeks. Many of you have been with me for so many years, and I just cry when I think that so many people will be leaving the company.”
He added that when workers are able to “get (their) immigration papers in order” they will be given priority treatment for future positions in the company.
The company previously said it was not found to have willingly hired illegal workers. American Apparel has touted its “sweatshop-free” operation and said it pays some of the highest wages in the industry.
Peter Schey, an attorney working with the company on the audit, said the results showed no wrongdoing by American Apparel. He said the government initially said it intended to impose a fine, but withdrew after correspondence with the company.
Schey said audits often lead to employee dismissals in companies that hire from large urban areas with sizable immigrant populations.
“This is pretty standard with companies when they get I-9 audits,” said Schey, who is also president of the Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law. He added that he suspects workers unable to provide documentation to American Apparel would probably seek work in sweatshops.
The company, which employs a total of about 10,000 workers, operates 275 retail stores in 20 countries. It also operates a wholesale business that supplies T-shirts and other casual wear to distributors and screen printers.
Shares of American Apparel rose 2 cents to close at $3.55 Thursday.
